Principles of Green Chemistry

11:41:00 PM

To address chemical pollution and natural resource depletion, variety of research efforts led to the emergence of green chemistry, an area of chemistry that focuses on the designing of products and processes that minimize the use and generation of hazardous substances.

In 1998, two chemists, Paul Anastas and John Warner, published a set of principles that guides the practice of green chemistry. These principles suggests ways to reduce environmental and health impacts brought by chemical production. Read them below.

Laboratory Safety 101: Laboratory Hazard Symbols

12:02:00 AM

A laboratory is a place full of signs. There are signs and labels for reagent bottles, storage cabinets, safety protocols, etc. One of the best ways for laboratory personnel to keep alert in the presence of hazardous chemicals is the use of hazard symbols, which are easier to remember. These symbols help us to know whether a particular chemical can cause harm to people and the environment. Familiarize yourself with these symbols to avoid any accident inside your laboratory.

Laboratory Safety 101: Cleaning Up Chemical Spills

11:41:00 PM

Chemical spillage frequently occurs in laboratories. Although it is common, all spills are different which is why all laboratories should have a definitive guidance or protocol for cleanup. Having a response plan could reduce eventual costs (in injury, pollution, dollars, pride, and job security).

Here are few guidelines that should be followed in case a chemical spill happens. Stay safe!
